About the intervention

Play Don't Starve Together with teammates in your cohort, where you have to try to survive and build a base with your teammates.

How to set it up.

  • Ask those in your cohort that are willing to participate to purchase the game.

  • Prepare computers compatible with the game (most Windows/IOS computers can do). Encourage students to bring their own laptops if they are compatible with the game.

  • Use a google form to allow students to indicate their preferable group size range (2-6, 7 and above), as well as their proficiency level in this game (never played before, have played before but cannot survive through winter/summer, have played before and can survive through winter/summer, have played before and can beat some of the bosses, have played before and can beat some of the bosses without any mods, have played before and can beat all the bosses, have played before and can beat all the bosses without any mods).

  • Allocate students into teams for them to play together. It might be tempting to put players with various proficiency levels in one team, so that the experts could help the beginners. However, this arrangement is likely to result in anxiety in the team. A good solution to this might be asking proficient participants to indicate in the form whether they wish to play with beginners, or to be in teams of experts. One of the most interesting aspects of this game is to slowly learn how to become an expert with other beginners.

What to do during.

  • One teammate creates a server for each team. Teams that have more than 6 participants should install a mod from Steam Workshp to increase the maximum team size.

  • The rest of the team search for the server and join the game.

  • If teams of beginners need help, encourage the experts to help them.

How you can mix it up ...

Games variations: You can make the game as an online common room and play games like hide and seek. You can compete with other teams by creating a PVP server. The difficulty of the game can be varied when creating server.
