About the intervention

A conversation starter for any occasion. Rose = share something you accomplished recently that you are proud of; Bud = share something you're doing currently that's going really well; Thorn = Talk about a challenge you're currently facing.

How to set it up.

Remote:

  • Set up a Teams channel/Zoom link where the call can be held.

  • Prepare a Miro template with 3 rows (rose, bud, thorn) and a column for each participant.

In-person:

  • Choose a venue, and some simple refreshments to bring along.

  • Form small groups of up to 5 and each person should share their rose, bud and thorn.

What to do during.

  • Give everyone at least 2 minutes to share a photo or statement in their column for each prompt.

  • Allow 3 minutes for each person to share their stories.

How you can mix it up ...

Themes: Can be suited to the occasion, being something very general to share with unknown people as a workshop icebreaker, sharing personal, deeper reflections to strengthen cohorts or sharing how teams or individuals progress on their projects during a period of time.

Frequency: This activity can be used as a unique intervention or as a regular event, which will be influenced by the choice of the topic according to the goal of the activity.

Material: Multiple supports and mediums can be used to communicate the reflections in-person, from a big whiteboard or a chalkboard to post-its, text, images, sketches or even watercolours.

Useful resources.

Use this Miro template to get started on your icebreaker session. Copy and Use the "Rose Thorn Bud" frame.
