About the intervention

Punish bad behaviour by paying a fine into a virtual swear jar, that can later be spent on a treat or celebration for the whole team.

How to set it up.

  • Define punishable behaviour with your teammates e.g. being late to meetings, or missing deadlines

  • Download a swear jar app such as 'Swear Jar Pro' on the App Store to keep track of your teammates' bad deeds

  • At the end of the project, everyone pays into a pot. This can simply be a bank transfer into someone's personal account to spend on a group activity.

What to do during.

  • One person, ideally the Team Leader or Operations Officer should be leading this activity i.e. managing the swear jar. to make sure it is fair for everyone

  • The team should have a discussion about expectations early on in the project timeline. Discuss what you find acceptable/unacceptable, share your method of working, your daily schedules and personal goals

  • A significant amount should be fined in order to ensure everyone takes the initiative seriously.

How you can mix it up ...

Goal: Raise money for charity instead of spending it on yourselves.
